Bowenwork helped me fully recover from a fracture of my right upper arm and shoulder. My doctor told me that the fracture would cause loss of range of motion in my shoulder and I would probably not be able to continue to swim for exercise. I had three Bowenwork sessions while recovering from the fracture and I am happy to report that my fracture healed beautifully. I have full range of motion and I can swim with ease!

What is Bowenwork Therapy?
Bowenwork is a series of gentle moves on the body by the practitioner. Because Bowenwork works best when the client relaxes into the “rest and repair” mode of healing, it is important that you be warm and comfortable.
The practitioner will make a series of very gentle moves on the body, after which the client is asked to rest for a couple of minutes to allow the body to integrate those moves.
The duration of the rest time varies with the procedure and is very important to allow the body to heal and respond in a gentle way. The practitioner may leave the room during this rest time.
Betty Ann it’s been amazing for me! You’ve helped my pain in my knee and I thought for sure I was headed back to dr. I went from wearing a compression sleeve daily to not at all! I love the whole approach and your explanations on how the body all works. It’s alleviated many little aches and pains too! I’m hooked!

Bowenwork FAQs
What is a typical Bowenwork session like?
Bowenwork is a series of gentle moves on the body by the practitioner. Because Bowenwork works best when the client relaxes into the “rest and repair” mode of healing, it is important that you be warm and comfortable. The practitioner will make a series of very gentle moves on the body, after which the client is asked to rest for a couple of minutes to allow the body to integrate those moves. The duration of the rest time varies with the procedure and is very important to allow the body to heal and respond in a gentle way. The practitioner may leave the room during this rest time.
How long is a Bowenwork session?
A typical first Bowenwork session is about an hour long and consists of a total body balancing using lower back, upper back and neck procedures. Brief wait times are a part of the session during which the body integrates the work. There are many different Bowenwork procedures, some of which consist of only a few moves and a longer rest time for the client.
Must I be completely undressed?
Bowenwork is best performed through lightweight clothing. You may decide what amount of clothing you prefer for your comfort; however, heavier fabrics such as denim are more difficult for the practitioner to work through. Bowenwork does not use oils or creams during treatment.
What will I feel in my body during a session?
Some clients feel a great deal of sensation during the rest times, others feel nothing at all. If you are feeling a lot of tingling or sensation in your body and would like additional rest time, just let the practitioner know that you would like a few more minutes before the next set of moves. The technique is working even if you feel no sensation. Most of all, you should feel relaxed and comfortable.
What conditions can be helped with Bowenwork?
Almost any! Besides the basic balance, there are techniques for respiratory, kidney and digestive issues, any type of joint pain, foot problems, lower back issues, TMJ and sinus conditions, headaches, anxiety and many others. There are also procedures for fertility issues.
Are there people who should not receive Bowenwork?
Because Bowenwork is so gentle, it is appropriate for almost everyone. Babies, children and those who are elderly or have autoimmune conditions can certainly benefit. Bowenwork can be performed with the client in the seated position if it is uncomfortable for the client to lie on a massage table. The practitioner is trained in assessment and determining the amount of work appropriate for clients in all situations.
What should I do after a Bowenwork session?
After a session, it is ideal to drink plenty of water, just as if you had had a massage. Toxins are released during the treatment and water is helpful in removing them from the body. Gentle walking or movement throughout the day is also helpful. It is possible that a client might feel a bit worse for a day or so after a session. The best thing to do in that situation is to drink plenty of water, keep moving, and wait.
Clients will notice the full effects of Bowenwork by waiting a few days after a session to schedule other bodywork such as chiropractic treatments or massage. Changes in the tissues are found even as long as ten days after a Bowenwork session.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions needed for a client to notice a difference varies with the client and with the length of time the problem has existed. It will most likely take longer to notice an effect for a condition that has existed for years than for a more acute situation. Most clients do notice an improvement physically and emotionally after just one or two sessions. If possible, trying a series of three sessions is helpful to see how the technique will work for you.
I saw a listing on my FB page about Bowen therapy. I was very interested and called and made an appointment with Betty Ann Dean. Immediately when I met her we seemed to connect, and I was so amazed with her aura.
I have been having nerve pain with my knees and legs for years. I had a complete knee replacement in March 2019, and have gotten very little relief with anything that I have tried. I have tried physical therapy, water therapy, massage, acupuncture and various creams and lotions, and several pain relief pills and prescriptions.
After the first treatment with Betty Ann, I noticed a considerable amount of relief. I have scheduled a couple more appointments with her, but will be moving back to Arizona the first part of April 2023. Betty Ann helped me connect to a Bowen therapist close to my home in Arizona, and with the relief I have experienced so far, I am very much looking forward to continuing Bowen therapy.
Betty Ann Dean has a beautiful, calming therapy facility. I felt so relaxed and comfortable and with her personality was very much at peace. Her personality, and knowledge and professionalism has been wonderful to experience. I for sure will stay in touch with her and hope to see her again.
